You’re likely spoilt for choice when it comes to deciding which place to surf next. With countless hotspots around the world to consider, the possibilities are almost endless – but consider the coveted, cherished surfing spots you may not have visited just yet.

Here are just five of the best surfing destinations around the world, and what to do there once you arrive.

Kuta, Bali: #1 surfing destination

There’s simply no denying Kuta’s potential for some incredible surfing opportunities. Known as one of the world’s top spots for it, as echoed by 1Cover, The beach here is home to some great surf, even for beginners getting to grips with it. With such varying waves and changing conditions here at Kuta Beach, it’s definitely a challenge – but a fun one at that.

Whilst in Kuta, be sure to make the most of the unique, beautiful Balinese town. Waterbom is widely said to be one of the world’s best waterparks, boasting a massive variety of thrilling slides and rides as well as more relaxed options. Elsewhere, stroll through the Beachwalk, a modern mall adjacent to the beach with international stores and local cuisine to sample.

Waikiki, Hawaii

Are you a surfing beginner looking to learn the ropes in an idyllic destination? Look no further than Waikiki – this Hawaiian city is the perfect place to start. Beautiful turquoise waters provide amazing conditions for an easy introduction, as well as for an experienced surfer looking for something milder than the norm – although sections such as Pops can get choppy and excited from time to time.

Known for being the world’s most famous ideal beach resort according to Planet Ware, Waikiki has a lot more to offer than just a good surf. From idyllic green spaces and mountainous terrain to the renowned zoo and aquarium, there’s simply no shortage of fun here in Waikiki. And, being in such close proximity to the centre of Honolulu, you’ve got everything pretty much on your doorstep.

Lagos, Portugal

You may not think of Portugal as being a hotspot for surfing, but think again – Lagos is often said to be one of the best places in the world for it. Despite an influx of tourism and a subsequent giving into the demand of visitors, it remains one of Portugal’s best offerings for surfing, if not the best of them all. The beaches of the Algarve are said to boast the best surf around the time of high tide, so make sure you don’t miss the right opportunity.

The centre of Lagos is very tourist-oriented, so expect plenty of rowdy bars and strips – but the scenery is where the town shines, Ponta da Piedade perhaps being the best example what with its luscious cave formations and glowing waters.

Victoria, Australia

If you’re a surfer, you’ve heard of Bells Beach. It’s the hotspot in Victoria, on the southeastern coast of Australia, and is often referred to as a must-visit for any serious surfer. Elsewhere in Victoria, areas such as Cape Woolamai and Gunnamatta Beach offer scenery and surf in abundance, a showcase of some of Australia’s most beautiful landscapes.

Victoria is home to a lot more than scenic views and surf, though. Torquay is a sleepy, laidback beach town with authentic food and pretty beaches to enjoy. Consider road tripping the Great Ocean Road before you leave, too – it’s one of the best routes in the entirety of the country.

Cancun, Mexico

Again, it’s a perfect place for the amateur surfer – but Cancun shouldn’t be overlooked by an expert, either. It’s one of the world’s most gorgeous locations, with bright turquoise waters lapping at white sands as bigger waves roar and crash in the distance.

But Cancun should be explored further, too. Its history is evident in ancient ruins and complexes such as Chichen Itza, and culture is prevalent in the Tequila Sensory Museum (yes – you get to sample it, too!). For a diverse, beautiful and exciting getaway, Cancun should be your chosen surfing destination.
